Safety and security: building our future
This safety flyer was shared with parent and teacher leaders on Jan.14.
Hello Everyone,
The VMSS PTO needs your help!
At the upcoming VMSS February 6th conferences we will be providing a hot and tasty soup meal for all teachers and staff.
We are looking for food donations, supply donations (plates, napkins, etc.), and volunteers to help out.
If making food donations please note we do have some teachers who are gluten-free and/or vegetarian, so any items that fit this criteria will be especially appreciated by those particular teachers! Please label your item if it does meet any dietary restrictions. When you sign up, just let us know what you will be bringing so we can hopefully avoid duplicates. Some of the classics (i.e., Chicken Noodle, Chili, etc.) we will want a couple. The teachers and staff appreciate this so much!
Please Note: all items can be dropped off at school no later than 3:30 pm on Thursday, February 6th, but they can be dropped off earlier in the day. Please label your items (serving utensils and dishes, crock pots, etc.). Utensils and serving dishes can be picked up after 6:45 pm or on Monday.

8th grade Families, message from Mrs. Walberg, 8th grade school counselor at VMSS:
This week I was in your student’s Global Studies to go over high school registration information.
As part of the lesson, we reviewed the high school course registration information and gave instructions on how to complete a draft of the 9th grade course registration form.
As homework-8th graders are to check in with their advisory teacher, other teachers and parent/guardian about their 9th grade course registration and submit the 9th grade course registration form as an assignment for Global Studies class.
AVHS high school counselors will be coming to complete the 9th grade course registrations in Global Studies classes on January 23rd.
If your 8th grade student is not attending Apple Valley High School next year and you would like your student to have assistance in registering for their 9th grade courses, please let me know. I’m currently working on options to have other the ISD 196 high school counselors to meet in person or virtually with students to help them with their forms & answer questions.

From District 196 Health Services: Dear ISD 196 Middle and High School Parent/Guardian,
Impaired vision and/or hearing can drastically impact a student’s ability to learn. During the months of October and November, District 196 nurses have partnered with the Eagan Lions Club to provide FREE vision screenings for 7th and 10th grade students under the MD5M Lions KidSight Foundation’s vision screening program. Valley Middle School 7th grade vision screening will be Tuesday, October 22.
Members of the Lions Club have been certified in the use of a vision screener. The vision screener is capable of screening for near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism and pupil size deviations. The individual screening of students only takes a few seconds and is performed from a distance of about three feet. No eye drops are administered.
If the student does not pass the screening, a vision referral letter will be sent home recommending further examination by an eye professional. No notice will be provided if the student passes. If you do not want your child screened or you have questions, please contact your child’s school nurse.
