From Ms. Walberg: Executive Functioning Skills Activities during iFocus
Executive functioning skills are a set of mental processes that help us manage ourselves to get things done, enabling us to plan, organize, manage time, focus, and control impulses. They act as the brain's "command center" to help with everyday tasks like homework, work, and social interactions, and include skills like working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. These skills are developed over time and can be improved with practice and strategies.
Key Executive Functioning Skills: Impulse Control, Emotional Control, Flexible Thinking, Working Memory, Self-Monitoring, Planning & Prioritizing, Task Initiation, and Organization
We will be learning and assessing our current abilities in a different Executive Functioning Skill each month. We will also get ideas for how to improve in that skill and determine things to try.
October, we learned about Organizational Skills. Check in with your student on what things they are trying to improve their organization skills.

PARENT ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Dear District 196 Middle and Parent/Guardian,
Impaired vision and/or hearing can drastically impact a student’s ability to learn. During the months of September and October, District 196 nurses have partnered with the Eagan Lions Club to provide FREE vision screenings for 7th students under the MD5M Lions KidSight Foundation’s vision screening program.
Members of the Lions Club have been certified in the use of a vision screener. The vision screener is capable of screening for near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, pupil size deviations, and gaze deviations. The individual screening of students only takes a few seconds and is performed from a distance of about three feet. Students are screened WITH any corrective lenses like glasses or contacts. No eye drops are administered.
If the student does not pass the screening, a vision referral letter will be sent home recommending further examination by an eye professional. No notice will be provided if the student passes. If you do not want your child screened or you have questions, please contact your child’s school nurse.
Sincerely,
District 196 Health Services

From Ms. Walberg: 6th grade families:
1. This week your 6th grade student received a paper planner to use to keep track of assignments. We went over these slides with a video during Eagle time to introduce the paper planners and how to use them. We will be practicing this method of organization this trimester. Tip-instead of asking your 6th grade student what they did at school today or what they have for homework, ask them “Let me see you planner”.
2. Did you miss the 6th grade parent presentation with Mr. Jotter and Mrs. Walberg during Open House? No worries, check out the presentation slides
