Magnet Schools of America logo

Three District 196 elementary magnet schools have been selected for recognition in Magnet Schools of America’s 2024 Merit Awards program. Diamond Path Elementary School of International Studies and Echo Park Elementary School of Leadership, Engineering and Technology are being recognized as Schools of Distinction, and Glacier Hills Elementary School of Arts and Science is one of a select group of schools in the nation to be named a Top School of Excellence.

The District 196 School Board on Jan. 22 selected five residents to interview to fill a vacancy on the board created when former board member Bianca Virnig was elected to fill a vacancy in District 52B of the Minnesota House of Representatives in Decembe

Newly elected District 196 School Board members Cory Johnson, Jackie Magnuson and Anna Williams took the oath of office to begin their four-year terms at the board’s Jan. 8 organizational meeting. Sachin Isaacs was also elected in the Nov. 7 School Board election and will take the oath at the next regular board meeting Feb. 12.

The District 196 School Board on Jan. 8 approved a resolution to accept the resignation of Board Director Bianca Virnig and declare a board vacancy, and a separate action to approve the process the board will use to fill the vacancy. Virnig won a special election Dec. 5 to fill the open seat in House District 52B. She will resign from the School Board Jan. 11.

District 196 is accepting applications from families interested in having their students attend a magnet school in the 2024-25 school year. The deadlines to submit applications are Jan. 5 for the five elementary magnet schools, Dec. 15 for Valley Middle School of STEM and Dec. 22 for the School of Environmental Studies optional high school for juniors and seniors.

The District 196 School Board on Tuesday approved the sale of $300 million in general obligation facilities maintenance and school building bonds to raise funds to pay for construction of facilities improvements that were approved by district voters in a bond referendum special election in May.

Students of the Year for 2022-23 were selected by teachers and administrators at all four comprehensive high schools in District 196. Students were selected based on their academic performance and participation in the given subject area during their high school career.

District 196 residents are invited to apply for membership on the district’s Budget Advisory Council (BAC). The district’s Finance Department is accepting applications through April 30 for one parent/guardian/resident position, one school principal position and one district employee (non-licensed) position. The term for all three positions is for three years, beginning July 1, 2023.
